MAINE COAST VACATION RENTAL COTTAGES, CABINS, AND A SIX-BEDROOM HOSTEL.
We Welcome guests bringing their dog to Birches Cottage.

Distinctive and authentic, one-of-a-kind oceanfront cottages...and a no frills 6-bedroom Hostel at Acorn by the Sea. These are perfect for your honeymoon, family vacation, romantic getaway, or group event.

Our ten cottages are sprinkled along the shore or nestled in the trees. Each is special in it's own way. Get a taste of and old Maine cottage colony here. Each cottage is marked by it's name. Hostel at Acorn by the Sea is a 6-bedroom option for those seeking a budget-wise, no frills alternative on the same gorgeous 60-acre coastal property.

Birches Welcoming your dog. (Bed to sleep 2 + hideabed sofa for 2)
On a grassy knoll tucked at the forest’s edge. Drive up and park on the grass. Knotty pine paneling, eat-in living room with granite fireplace and hide-a-bed couch (sleeps 2 extra). There is a small ground-level deck. It overlooks the gardens, century-old Oakland House Hotel, and the fields and ocean beyond. Furnishings are a mix of new and comfy old. There is a bathroom with tub and shower, a queen bedroom to sleep 2. Kitchen with two cook top burners, a small oven plus a microwave oven. There is a full-sized refrigerator. Cottage Maximum 4 people.

We welcome guests who desire to vacation in Birches Cottage with their well-behaved dog (per our Pet Policy* at $10/day).

Ledges Honeymoon Perfect. (Bed to sleep 2 + hideabed sofa for 2)
Full of charming authenticity! It’s a sophisticatedly rustic log-style cottage. Short “walk-in” path. Knotty pine paneling, finished ceilings, h ardwood floors, carpet, comfortable vintage furnishings. King bedroom (to sleep 2) and bathroom with tub and shower. Eat-in living room with welcoming real wood burning granite fireplace and hide-a-bed sofa (to sleep 2 extra). Kitchenette with microwave. There is an oceanside deck with a view of the sparkling sea just a few hundred feet below. This is a cozy place and perfect for honeymooners, singles, creative people, and lovers. Cottage Maximum 4 people.

Oak Grove   (Bed to sleep 2 + hideabed sofa for 2)
Woodsy green (in color) and glowingly welcoming as you return at night, it is situated high above the water’s edge. It blends into the trees at the edge of the oak grove. It has easy drive-up access. Eat-in living room has a spectacular view spanning the Eggemoggin Reach to Little Deer Isle. Living room has granite fireplace, knotty pine paneling, and hide-a-bed couch (to sleep 2 extra). Queen bedroom (to sleep 2) and bathroom with tub and shower. New kitchen with built-in cooktop, full refrigerator and convection/microwave oven. There is a rustic sitting area beside the cottage with a view of the sea. Cottage Maximum 4. No pets, thank-you.

Homestead East   (Bed to sleep 2 + hideabed sofa for 2)
The woodsy green (in color) sunrise side of the Homestead Duplex is on a rocky bluff at the edge of the sea. It has easy drive-up access. Knotty pine paneling, queen bedroom (to sleep 2), eat-in living room with hide-a-bed couch (sleeps 2 extra) and fireplace, bathroom with tub and shower. Kitchenette with conduction hot plate, microwave oven and full-sized refrigerator. Homestead East is connected via a two-door hall to the sunset side Homestead West. It is private, yet is often used by families and friends who want to vacation in close proximity to one another. There is a wonderful oceanfront rustic patio with each side of this duplex. The view across the ocean to Pumpkin Island Lighthouse and the setting sun starts just a few feet from the oceanside door. Cottage Maximum 4. No pets, thank-you.

Homestead West   (Bed to sleep 2 + hideabed sofa for 2)

It is private, yet is often used by families and friends who want to vacation in close proximity to one another. There is a wonderful oceanfront rustic patio with each side of this duplex. The view across the ocean to Pumpkin Island Lighthouse and the setting sun is soothing and refreshing. With a secluded spot on the ledge above the sea upon which to ponder the beauty before you. Cottage Maximum 4. No pets, thank-you.

Flagstaff   (beds to sleep 4 + hideabed sofa for 2)
A sophisticatedly rustic, 2-bedroom log-style cottage. It was built from native trees harvested on site and natural granite from the family quarry. There is easy drive-up parking. It’s a distinctive, one of a kind place. The ceiling is open to the log rafters, comfortable refinished rustic furniture from a bygone era, a full width Oceanside porch. Two bedrooms (a queen and two twins to sleep 4). Porch rockers provide for a comfortable wooded view of the Reach below. Its living room has a granite fireplace and a hide-a-bed couch. There’s a full bathroom with tub and shower, and a new full kitchen with campy pantry and sink room. Cottage Maximum 6. No pets, thank-you.

Grindstone   (beds to sleep 4 + hideabed sofa for 1 )
A sophisticatedly woodsy, rustic, 2-bedroom log-style cottage. It has a short “walk-in” pathway. The ceiling is open to high log rafters. Great hearth with a “grindstone” embedded. This takes you away to a yesteryear world of relaxation and carefree days. Real wood burning fireplace with eat-in living room and single-size hide-a-bed (sleeps 1 extra). Two bedrooms (a queen and two twins to sleep 4). Bathroom with tub and shower. Full kitchen. The covered front porch has glimpses of the sparkling ocean below. Beds to sleep 4. Cottage Maximum 5. No pets, thank-you.

Westerly   (beds to sleep 4 + hideabed sofa for 2)
Key location for those who want to be right by the beach and oceanfront! The most recently built cottage….well, the late 1960’s. Its history is of comfort and family fun…over and over for all these years. Such adventures from here! Drive-up access. Pickled pine paneling, comfortable furnishings, large wood burning fireplace in open living-dining room with hide-a-bed sofa (to sleep 2 extra) and wide swath of windows facing the sea, islands, and setting sun. Twin bedroom (to sleep 2) and king bedroom (to sleep 2) both adjoin bathroom with tub and shower. Large kitchenette with microwave oven. Large oceanside deck. Sandy beach and cove below. Cottage Maximum 6. No pets, thank-you.

Hostel@Acorn by the Sea (6 Individual Rooms with shared baths and common spaces)
The Hostel@Acorn offers individual rooms in a "no frills, budget-wise" old-fashioned campy cottage. It has six private rooms with either twin-, full-, or queen-sized beds or a combination of beds. There is a communal kitchen for fixing your own meals, a common living room/dining room, third floor library, shared indoor bathrooms with a hot shower. One has a historic claw foot tub like your great-grandmother used to have. Guests loved Hostel@Acorn by the Sea last year (our first year of utilizing the building this way). This is perfect for guests 18 and up. It's on the same gorgeous property as Oakland House's Cottages are on. See more at Hostel@Acorn by the Sea

Good to bring with you:

Flashlights - handy on country nights when walking through woodsy paths to cottages.
Battery operated lanterns - occasionally the power goes off for awhile. No candles, thank-you, due to fire hazard.
Guide books - to the trees, birds, shells, fish, stars, starfish, seaweed, flowers.
Binoculars - to see eagles, more.
Windbreaker, Sweatshiirts,Walking Shoes and Beach Shoes - whale watches are really chilly out to sea, evenings can be chilly.
Beach blankets and towels - Blanket to lie on in the sand/ towels to wrap-up-in after swimming.
Maps - We have local maps. Delorme’s map of Maine is great. A GPS can be really nice.
Cameras and film
Sun Gear - Glasses, floppy hat, sunblock and tanning lotion.
Books - Bring some or visit the Brooksville Public library. It has free internet access too.
Fishing gear - no license required in saltwater. Licenses are required for freshwater fishing.


Glossary:
  • Campy - describes an unfinished quality such as exposed wall studs, old-fashioned or rustic details. Casual, yet very comfortable!
  • Bedrooms - “single” means one twin bed, “twin” means two twin beds, “double” means one double bed, “queen” means one queen bed, “king” means one king bed.
  • Kitchenette - has a refrigerator, sink, counter space, toaster, cooktop or hot plate, automatic coffeemaker. All have microwave ovens. There is a large selection of utensils, pots and pans, dishes, etc. No oven. Full Kitchens have ovens.
  • Phone Service is available in some cottages. Cell service is sporadic locally.
  • New for the season of 2016: WiFi for email, google searches, facebook, and basic use. Not like "in city" connection but useful to us here.
